5.2 Choice of display type

5.2.1 General

Choose according to Design criteria (p. 74) and the considerations below.

Consider the nature of the information and what is to be done with it, paying particular attention to the difficulties of attending to sensing, interpreting (perception), memorizing and responding to information. Where attention is critical, two cues are better than one.

5.2.2 Lights

This includes illuminated buttons and colour coding.

Warnings/urgent messages: combine with an auditory alarm for gaining attention, flashing or steady.

Discrepancy: flashing light or steady, caution, etc.

Indication: steady.

Confirmation: command received.

Lights are useful for rhythmical information, ease of attention and search, recognition, discrimination and speed of response. With controls they are useful for checking and setting.
